Tart apples, cinnamon and brown sugar are the perfect combination for this simple dessert.
Ingredients for the topping:
2/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup rolled oats
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 stick butter
Ingredients for filling:
4 large apples (Granny Smith, Jonathan and Empire are good choices)
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
2. Grease a 2 quart baking dish.
3. For the filling, peel and core the apples, then slice and layer in baking dish. Sprinkle with the brown sugar and cinnamon.
4. For the topping, place the flour, rolled oats, granulated sugar and butter (softened) in a large bowl. Mix well and sprinkle over the apples. Bake 20 to 25 minutes, until the apples have softened and the topping is lightly golden.
Serve warm.
Variation: Instead of apples, you can used fresh berries. Add to the ingredients 1 tablespoon of flour over the berries before you add your topping. The flour will bind the liquid given off by the berries so the crumble will not become soggy
